A Parent’s Guide to the Soccer Pathway

A Parent’s Guide to the Soccer Pathway

From U3 to Adult • Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s Soccer Association

Every player’s journey is different. PCSP Spurrs offers entry points for children who are just discovering soccer, players who want extra practice, and players ready for more structured competitive opportunities. This guide explains the main programs in plain language and helps families understand what may come next.

Important: age groups, birth years, registration dates, program availability and selection processes can change from season to season. Always use the current registration page and program-specific policy as the final source of information.

1. Club Soccer: the place to start

Club Soccer (formerly called House League) is the association’s recreational program for young players from U3 to U13. Registration is open, and no team selection is required. It is designed for children at any skill level who want a local, recreational experience without the travel and commitment of representative teams.

Parents can generally expect:

  • A focus on participation, enjoyment and learning basic soccer skills.
  • A local program without routine travel for games.
  • An opportunity to try soccer before deciding whether to pursue additional training.
  • Seasonal scheduling and fees published on the current registration page.

2. Spurrs Academy: extra development and confidence

Spurrs Academy is a developmental/recreational training option for players who want to improve their technique, game understanding, teamwork and confidence. It is open registration and no selection requirement for the Academy, with indoor training during the fall and winter. Spots may be limited due to indoor facilities availability.

All groups have two practices per week: one on turf and one in a gym. The mix of varied surfaces helps players develop important skills needed for the Metro season in the spring/summer. Age groups, spaces, dates, facilities and fees are season-specific, so check the live page before registering.

Academy is a development opportunity, not a promise of a future Metro or All-Star place. Players may use the experience to build skills and confidence before deciding what kind of soccer they want to pursue.

3. Metro League: a structured development pathway

The club’s Metro program covers U7-U13 age groups. It is open registration, and no selection is made for U7, U8 and U9 age groups, as teams are balanced. For U10, U11 and U13 age groups, evaluations may take place late in the winter to select tiered or balanced teams based on the players who are registered for a certain season.

What this means for families:

  • Metro adds a more structured team and training commitment than recreational Club Soccer.
  • Younger Metro age groups emphasize fundamentals, trying different positions, confidence, participation and enjoyment.
  • At older age groups, players continue technical development and begin applying more team and tactical ideas.
  • If a player is interested in taking part in the Metro program, they must register within registration deadlines, as especially for U10-U13 teams, knowing the players who will be in the program is essential to make proper decisions.
  • Being selected for a Metro team in one year is not a guarantee of an All-Star selection in the following year. Players develop at different rates, and a player can continue to learn and enjoy soccer through other club options.

4. All-Star

a) Lighthouse and Compass teams (U12 & U13)

The U12 and U13 All-Star program does not follow a traditional single tryout format. Instead, players are evaluated throughout the season based on their technical skills, development potential, coachability, attitude and commitment.

  • U12 All-Star: Players are evaluated throughout their U11 Metro Season.
  • U13 All-Star: Players are evaluated throughout their U12 Compass or Lighthouse, or U13 Metro League season.
  • U13 Spurrs Academy: Academy players may also be invited to join either the U12 or U13 All-Star team, depending on their age group and overall performance throughout the Fall/Winter training.

This approach allows coaches and the technical team to assess players over time in a competitive environment, supporting a fairer and more comprehensive evaluation of their development and readiness for the program.

b) Premier and Championship teams

This program is a tryout-based representative pathway. The exact age groups and offerings depend on the season.

Compared with recreational programs, families should be prepared for:

  • A formal tryout or selection process and team placement by the club’s technical staff, in line with the relevant policy.
  • A higher commitment to training, attendance, match preparation and team responsibilities.
  • Provincial league games and possible travel outside the Metro area for games or tournaments.
  • Program fees and travel-related costs.

The club’s evaluation includes: technical ability, tactical understanding, game knowledge, fitness, coachability and sportsmanship. Families should read the current tryout policy for attendance requirements, late evaluations, selection procedures and communication timelines.

5. Senior Soccer

The Spurrs Senior Program provides opportunities for players to continue their development and compete at different levels of the game. This program may include Challenge Cup, Jubilee Trophy and Intermediate and Masters teams, catering to different levels of experience, ability, and competitive ambition.

  • Challenge Cup and Jubilee Trophy: A competitive senior program focused on performance, tactical development, and competing at the highest level available within the club and province
  • Intermediate: A bridge between youth and senior soccer, helping players transition into the adult game while continuing to develop their skills, confidence, and understanding of the game.
  • Masters: Team for players aged 35 and over, offering opportunities to stay active, enjoy competitive soccer, and continue building camaraderie in a supportive team environment.

Team placements and opportunities are determined by player evaluations, ability, commitment, coachability, and team needs. Our goal is to provide a positive and competitive environment where players can continue their soccer journey beyond youth soccer.

How do players move between programs?

There is no single automatic ladder that every player must climb. A family’s best option depends on the player’s age, interest, experience, goals, available program spaces and the current rules.

  • Club Soccer is a suitable starting point for children who are new to the game or prefer a recreational environment.
  • Spurrs Academy offers additional training and skill development without a selection process.
  • Metro provides a more structured team experience through the club’s age-specific registration/evaluation process.
  • All-Star teams use invitation (U12/13) and formal tryouts and selection (U15/17).
  • Senior opportunities depend on the current competitive and recreational programs.

A player may progress, change programs, take a break or return later. Not being selected for one program does not mean a player should stop playing soccer or that they may not be able to make it in the following year.

What does the club expect from families?

  • Support the player’s learning, confidence and enjoyment—not just results or selection.
  • Read program information and policies before registering, including fees, schedules, attendance and program expectations.
  • Communicate respectfully with coaches and program staff and use the club’s established channels for questions or concerns.
  • Help create a positive environment for teammates, officials, coaches and opponents.
  • Complete required registration and safety steps, including Respect in Sport for Parents where required by the program.
